Bandleader, drummer and composer Barra Brown is a member of the newest surge of young musicians to develop a presence in the creative music scene here in Portland. The BBQ is comprised of several notable figures from the Portland Jazz community, and the compositions and group interplay create something greater than the sum of its parts: a sensitive ensemble presenting epic, sweeping compositions with finesse and subtlety. “Like those other Portland-bred jazzers, Blue Cranes and Esperanza Spalding, Brown stands a real chance of breaking out of the jazz bubble and reaching much broader audiences.” -Willamette Week.  Joining Barra will be Nicole Glover-sax, Thomas Barber-trumpet, Adam Brock-guitar, Arcellus Sykes-bass. World renowned pianist and educator, George Colligan, brings his original vision to the drums with Theoretical Planets, a group which features the hottest young jazz players from the Oregon area to interpret Colligan's compositions. Michaela Dale & Meghan Wilson, with Tom Grant – Dynamic young jazz vocalists, Michaela Dale and Meghan Wilson, who are cultivating their own fresh and distinct sound, will sing tunes from the Great American Songbook, intermixed with blues and pop. They will be accompanied by award winning pianist and composer, Tom Grant. These exceptionally talented young vocalists will captivate you with their entrancing performances!
 

Fri, 7/11: Paula Byrne Trio, 7:30pm - $8.
Charismatic jazz & blues vocalist Paula Byrne – who sells out the house on a regular basis at the Camellia Lounge, and whose stage presence lights up the whole room, will be joined by pianist Randy Porter and  bassist Andrea Niemiec. Paula captivates audiences with her sultry and sassy vocal chops, as she blends beautifully with her stellar musicians.  You are in for a memorable evening with this smokin’ Trio!  7:30pm - $8.
 

Sat, 7/12: Rick Greene Quartet, 7:30pm - $7.
Rick has been an important member of the Portland jazz scene for over thirty years. He has also performed in New York City with the late jazz organist Brother Jack McDuff. Rick's quartet will feature mostly his original compositions in the styles of John Coletrane's modal music to Ornette Coleman's free jazz, to jazz standards. The band will include some of Portland's finest musicians including Greg Goebel-piano, Scott Steed-bass and Ron Steen – drums.  We hope you can join us for an evening of music and joy!  7:30pm - $8.

Thurs, 7/17: Brenda Xu & Anne-Marie Sanderson, 8pm - $6.
Brenda Xu's music has been described as haunting and melodic with a rock influence, and has been compared to that of Aimee Mann and Daughter. Brenda performs predominantly in the Pacific Northwest, and will release a new CD in the Fall. Her last CD release was in 2009 and she was nominated for, “Best Acoustic Artist” at the San Diego Music Awards. Anne-Marie Sanderson is a British singer-songwriter, currently living in Portland, Oregon.  Her EP, Eloquence, has received glowing reviews on both sides of the Atlantic, gaining recognition in equal measure for her well-crafted songs, innovative guitar playing, and her enchanting vocal style.  Her music is often compared to that of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake. Four intriguing vocalists who perform regularly at the Camellia Lounge Monday night vocal jam,  will perform Jazz Standards intermixed with blues and pop. These talented vocalists carry their own distinct style of storytelling, and engage the audience with their soulful, and dazzling performances. Fri, 7/25: Ryan Meagher Quartet, 8pm - $10.
Ryan Meagher has made his name in the international jazz community with a brand of original music coined, "modern jazz for the indie rocker."  His most recent release on PJCE Records, Tango In the City of Roses, stayed much closer to what most feel comfortable labeling "jazz" but contained vestiges of his angsty suburban upbringing that gave his music its soul.  Ryan is a recent transplant from NYC, but has already solidified his place in our burgeoning modern jazz scene.  His band will include one of his closest musical cohorts, Vinnie Sperrazza, on drums who is in Portland for the summer from NYC.  Rounding out his trio is Chris Higgins on bass, and John Nastos on alto sax. Catch this colorful and soulful modern jazz ensemble!  8pm - $10.
 

Sat, 7/26: Thomas Barber’s Spiral Road, 8pm – $10.
Spiral Road is a new group from bandleader, trumpeter, and composer Thomas Barber. The ensemble features original music by Barber that aims to explore the use of constant, unpredictable shifts in rhythm and harmony, while drawing from a diverse array of musical styles.  While living in NYC, Thomas performed with Paul Simon, Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Tom Harrell among others. Thomas will play trumpet and bass. Joining him will be Clay Giberson-piano, Dan Duval-guitar, and Tyson Stubalek-drums. Don’t miss this captivating jazz quintet!  
 

Thurs, 7/31: Kogut/Doolin Quartet, 8pm - $7.
Original instrumental jazz by guitarists Paul Kogut and Mike Doolin. An eclectic mix of instrumental styles, from ECM style acoustic to straight ahead jazz to electric fusion. Chicago based Kogut has released three CDs as a leader, and has worked with such artists as Charles Earland, Clark Terry and Drew Gress. Portland based Mike Doolin has released three CDs as a leader, and has worked with such artists as Mel Brown, Louis Pain and Janice Scroggins.  Joining Kogut  and Doolin will be Dave Captein-bass, and Ward Griffiths-Drums. Check out this smokin’ jazz ensemble!

Hailing from Napa, CA, the dazzling Kellie Fuller is a vocalist that cannot be locked into a single genre or decade. She performs some of the most beloved songs  from the early 1900's to the 1960's.  Kellie brings jazz, pop and The Great American Songbook to the stage with her own blend of humor and warmth. Joining her will be outstanding musicians, Joe Millward-piano, and Tim Rap-drums. Kellie Fuller’s performance will captivate you!  8pm - $7.
Sat, 8/2: Brad Linde/Erika Dohi Duo, 8pm - $10.
Washington DC saxophonist Brad Linde and New York pianist Erika Dohi improvise duets informed by their experiences in Baroque counterpoint, 20th Century music and modern jazz. Free improvisation is developed from variations and themes from original compositions inspired by Jimmy Giuffre, Lennie Tristano, Paul Motian, Stockhausen, Cage, and Ligeti. Joining them will be Tyson Stubelek on drums. Don’t miss this eclectic and mesmerizing jazz trio! 8pm - $10.

True North jazz band is a talented and lively sextet performing vocal jazz and swing standards as well as melodic, versatile original compositions. Featured vocalist, Dan Murphy lights up the room with his  smooth, charming approach, and a touch of  Chet Baker added to the mix. Murphy and band members, Kathy James (keyboards), Steve Morgan-bass, Eric Austin-sax, clarinet, and Brad McMillan-trombone, have been captivating their audiences throughout the Portland area for several years. With “great pipes” and savvy phrasing she is musical ear candy sweetened with considerable verve and energy.  This musical angel has stylings that are fun and frolicking. “She sings and she swings!!! ”- Richard Lazere, Jazz Society of Oregon Club Scene. Fri, 8/15: Art Lillard Quartet, 8pm - $10.
Drummer/composer Art Lillard has been leading bands in New York City for decades. Originally from Miami, Lillard played with Ira Sullivan, then attended Berklee College of Music. Lillard then quickly established himself in NYC as a serious Jazz drummer, composer and band leader. His Heavenly Big Band was formed in 1987, and can be heard on the Summit record label. He’s one of the hardest swinging, most musical drummers you will ever hear. He will be joined by saxophonist David Valdez, who played in Lillard’s band in NYC. Also joining Lillard will be Weber Iago-piano and Chris Higgins-bass. This group will be SMOKIN’!  8pm - $10.

Sat, 8/16: Caili O’Doherty Group, 8pm - $10.
New York-based pianist Caili O'Doherty is back in her hometown Portland for a short northwest tour with her band. The Caili O'Doherty Group has performed at the Toronto Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, and recently at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival. Caili will be joined by Brian Chahley on trumpet,  John Snow on bass, and from Houston, TX, Cory Cox on drums. This is a show you don't want to miss!.

Fri, 8/22: Todd Bishop Group –  Oregon native and drummer, Todd Bishop  has been performing and teaching professionally in the US and internationally since 1985. With his unique multi-layered and organic percussive approach, Todd is a compelling musician, and has thrilled audiences with visceral performances owing as much to the influence of Olatunji or Keith Moon as to the jazz masters. Travelogue is a new CD of Bishop’s original music, composed in collaboration with Brazilian pianist Jasnam Daya Singh (Weber Iago). Additional members are Chris Higgins-bass, Tim Willcox-Saxophone. Don’t miss this captivating jazz ensemble!

Stu Cook & Company - with special guests, Julie Homie on piano, and Jim Pribbenow on Saxophone. Stu is a west coast jazz drummer who has performed in the Bay area and in Sacramento. Stu performed with the late great Leroy Vinnegar for several years, and has been a mainstay in the Portland jazz scene since 1983, working with such greats as John Jensen, Brian Ward, and Andre St James. Also joining Stu will be stellar musician, Cary Miga on bass. This gig is going to COOK!  8pm - $8.

Adlai Alexander is an incomparable jazz vocalist, who’s soulful  interpretations, and unusual jazz vocal style sets him apart from the mainstream. Adlai will be joined by the outstanding bassist, Andre St. James, who has played with Sonny Rollins, Bobby Hutcherson & Herb Ellis, among others.  Join Adali Alexander and Andre St. James for an exhilarating evening of jazz grooves!  8pm - $6.


Fri, 8/29: Mary Ann Anderson & Doug MacDonald, 8pm - $8.
Jazz duo May Anne Anderson and Doug MacDonald have recently released “Rendezvous,” a collection of Jazz standards, originals, and some fun surprises. Anderson “has the poise and lightness of a musical truth-teller. . . sparse, playful and emotive” say the pundits. Critically-acclaimed and first-call L.A. guitarist Doug MacDonald “supplies a magic carpet ride for any singer who dares to fly.” This is their debut at the Camilla Lounge, and they will perform songs from the CD as well as a blend of Jazz favorites, with a few French twists. TOQUE LIBRE RETURNS! Toque Libre combines melodic pop sensibilities with Flamenco Rumba rhythms, and they are huge fun to see live.
